Schoolboy Rugby in South Africa is huge. It’s incredibly competitive, the standard of rugby is excellent and huge amounts of time, effort and commitment go into the sport, from the players to the coaches to the parents.
Excitement is mounting for the upcoming Schoolboy Easter Rugby Festival, co-hosted by St Stithians, KES and St. Johns. And what better way could there be to spend a long weekend in the sunshine, in a comfy chair, with an icy cold drink, watching very good rugby?
No better way. Which means you need to start planning now if you’re coming to Johannesburg as a very proud parent or supporter.
A lot of our Johannesburg Guesthouses (all of them in fact) are well positioned for any of the hosting schools. Melrose Place Guest Lodge is particularly close to St Stithians and are offering an Easter rugby special – just R 1000 per room per night, including a fantastic breakfast.
Melrose Place will help you plan and organise transport to and from the venue. It’s a seriously gorgeous guest lodge which means when you come home from the rugby, hot, sweaty and excited, you can relax in the tranquil garden or by their beautiful swimming pool and there are several fabulous restaurants nearby. They’re used to hosting sports fans, being the preferred choice for the Netherlands during the Soccer World Cup.
Hands on Retreat in Craighall are close by too, and imagine being able to watch rugby and then enjoy a spa treatment.
The festival takes place between the 24th and 28th of March 2016 (you can see the programme links below) and all the major boys’ schools are included. Teams are not only local, there are schools from Cape Town, Paarl, Durban, the Midlands, Bloemfontein and Zimbabwe, and all the top and prestigious schools will be here.
If you’re in Johannesburg for the weekend, go watch some rugby. And if you’re coming to Johannesburg for the weekend, book one of our Johannesburg Guesthouses. If you’re not a rugby fan, you still have two weeks to learn the rules. Have fun!
