Vintage clothing is all the rage. And that does not mean second hand junk clothing, it means good designer clothing, lovingly worn and beautifully looked after by somebody else.
We have a few shops, all near our Johannesburg Guesthouses, that are divine. You can spend hours finding bargains, looking for the perfect label, a little black dress or a pair of Manolo Blahniks. At fabulous prices. Check out the following stores when you have time.
You’ll find all styles here from old to modern vintage. They have an incredible selection, rare, imported and branded clothing, for both men and women. The owner spends a lot of time in Europe and has a special love for all things Italian – Miu Miu, Versace, Prada and Armani, but you’ll also find the more reasonably priced H&M, Hennes and Zara. You can find a top for R 300 or R 3000, so look carefully. It’s delightful. Great selection of shoes too.
4th Avenue, Corner 6th Street, Parkhurst, open Mon-Sat 10 am to 5 pm.
The owner, Annabelle Desfontaines, opened the original Wizards Boutique in Hyde Park in 1982. Annabelle’s style is one good reason to dress in vintage clothing – she’s a moody dresser who always looks magnificent. Her love for clothing shines through, and each item in her store has been lovingly hand-picked. It’s all designer labels, second-hand but in mint condition. Her range of jewelry is divine, and I must say, I buy all my necklaces here. Shoes too. I’m able to wear Jimmy Choo’s, without paying Jimmy Choo prices. Definitely worth a visit.
44 Stanley Avenue, Milpark. Mon to Sat, 10 am to 5 pm.
This is the new kid on the block, the store that has brought glamour back to Melville. Stuff we Love started as an online store, then a pop-up shop, and now they have their own gorgeous stylish store on 7th Avenue. Here you don’t have to sift through the rail as the clothing is curated, beautifully presented and it’s easy to see and sort through. There are Dolce and Gabbana shifts, Ralph Lauren cocktail dresses and beautiful silk camisoles, all excellently priced and looking for new homes. I found summer trousers here from France, R 300, and everyone comments how gorgeous they are. They have shoes, travel bags and some jewels too, as well as fabulous service and a great atmosphere.
7th Street, Melville, between 3rd and 4th Avenue, Wed to Sunday, 11 am to 6 pm.
The above stores are all close to our Johannesburg Guesthouses. We’ll happily give you directions or even arrange an Uber so you don’t have to drive. You’ll likely sip a bit of champagne while you try on your frocks!
