Spoil your Mom – have a magnificent day

May is the month for mothers.  Those wonderful women who pack lunch-boxes, nurse scratched knees, lie awake at night waiting for their teens to come home, lovingly feed and walk the dogs, schlep the kids to soccer and ballet, and of course, love and look after the fathers too!

Sunday, 13 May is Mother’s Day.  It’s a day to give Mom a Hallmark Card, or even a homemade card, make her breakfast in bed, and shower her with chocolates and flowers.  And then spoil her with a wonderful spa treatment, perhaps a fabulous outdoor lunch, or a family day in the park.

Flowers win any women’s heart.  If you’re staying at one of our Johannesburg guesthouses, you don’t need to sneak into the garden to pick a fragrant, fresh bunch.  Your host will happily give you a pair of scissors and direct you to the roses. If you need a florist, Dunkeld Fruit and Flowers or Tyrone Fruiterers in Parkview are both in The Parks, close to all our guesthouses.

Delia, owner of Rutland House in Craighall Park, with her daughter Kate picknicking in Delta Park.

Of course, you can also ask your guesthouse owner to book a delicious restaurant on your behalf.

The Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel in Sandton is making every effort to impress mothers with their special Brunch Buffet at the Central One restaurant. It promises to be a winner.

Or go and enjoy the famous Mother’s Day Sunday Lunch Buffet at the award-winning fine dining Balata Restaurant at the Fairway Hotel in Randburg.

A high tea may be more Mom’s thing. At 1Fox in Joburg central there will be a Mother’s Day Opera and High Tea performed by the Gauteng Opera. It starts at 1pm and a special big screen display has been arranged for on the day. The Wanderers Club in Illovo will also be hosting a delicious high tea in the tea garden starting at 12pm.

If you’re looking for something more family orientated, the 702 Mother’s Day Picnic at The Zoo is a Johannesburg annual institution. This year entertainment includes the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, Mzanzi Youth Choir, Nomfundu Xaluva and Joseph Clark.

It’s autumn in Johannesburg.  The sky is a warm blue and the red gold colors on the trees are magnificent.  Get outside and attend the Nirox Winter Sculpture Fair in the Cradle of Humankind. There will be contemporary art combined with the best food and wine from the Franschhoek Valley.

Nirox Sculpture Park is located on 15 hectares of landscaped gardens and waterways within an extensive private nature reserve in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. The Park is 45 minutes from the centers of Johannesburg and Tshwane.

Alternatively – stay indoors! Spoil your wife by booking a romantic evening at one of our Johannesburg guesthouses.   You won’t be disappointed.
