Parkview has to be one of our favourite areas in Johannesburg’s “the Parks” suburbs. The people who live here are proud of their suburb and have the most extraordinary sense of community. It is the one suburb where everyone really does know their neighbour’s names, where you can see dog walkers, joggers and cyclists, day and night, and really get out and enjoy life on the streets.
It may be because of the lovely village atmosphere that extends along the one block of Tyrone Avenue, it may be because of the local park, and it may be because of the wide magnificent tree-lined streets. You can easily get all your chores done on Tyrone – buy flowers, pick up a prescription, grab a cup of coffee, buy a gorgeous dress, have a gourmet meal, get your printing done, have a manicure, buy local arts and crafts or stock up on groceries.
The area has a few nursery schools; the excellent Parkview Junior School and Parkview Senior School, as well as Parktown Girls High School, a few churches, the magnificent Zoo Lake and the George Hay Park. No matter what time you are at George Hay you will see dogs chasing balls, Mamas and their babes, picnics, small parties and people lazing under trees or on the benches, normally named after residents. Often on a long weekend there is something going on in the park – a Mother’s Day picnic, Valentine’s event, a potjiekos competition, a Halloween party, sometimes outdoor movies or a private function. It’s vibrant and colourful.
Our featured Johannesburg Guesthouse this week therefore has to be in Parkview. Roscommon Cottage is on a beautiful tree-lined street, Roscommon Road, just two minutes away on foot from Tyrone Avenue, two minutes from George Hay Park and four minutes from the Zoo Lake. The position is seriously perfect, for either a business traveller or a tourist.
Roscommon Cottage has two cottages, both self catering, fully equipped and rather gorgeous. One has a full kitchen, the other a small kitchenette with everything you could think of. There is safe and off-street parking, free Wi-fi, DSTV, and Moira Messenger is an amazing and gracious host. Her visitors are both local and overseas; some stay for one day and some stay for one month.
If guests don’t feel like self-catering, Moira will fill the fridge with all sorts of breakfast and snack goodies, and it is also really easy to wander down to one of the many restaurants on Tyrone. My Bread and Butter is a fantastic restaurant, Croft is hip, trendy and fab, there is Stelle for divine Italian, Europa open all day/evening, and Franco’s for the best pizzas. The Perfect Cup has the most delicious home ground coffee, so the choice is large.
Moira’s rates at Roscommon Cottages start at R 640.00 per single – excellent value for position and perfection. What I love about Moira is that she always answers the phone immediately, and she is always available. The service is excellent and friendly. You’ll be happy booking here, we know.
