Mother’s Day is this Sunday 11 May, and if you’re anything like I am, you haven’t yet decided what to do or even bought a present. The present part is easy – get thee to a store now and buy a beautiful book, chocolates or flowers – The Rosebank Mall has an amazing selection of shops and is close to all our Johannesburg Guesthouses – but the deciding what to do is harder. As usual, we are here to help you.
Top of our list would be the annual Nirox Winter Sculpture Fair. This is always the most beautiful event. It takes place over the whole weekend, 9/10 May, the enormous landscaped gardens are transformed into a temporary artistic wonderland and Franschhoek’s top chefs and winemakers all set up shop. The autumn sunshine, art, food and wine are always magnificent. Tickets must be purchased in advance, R150 per person, and it is really the most inspiring and creative way to spend a day.
Then there is the Kaya FM Mother’s Day Concert at The Zoo. The Johannesburg Festival Orchestra performs a range of timeless classics as well as some more contemporary music and you can take a picnic, lay your blanket out in the sun and enjoy the music. The concert starts at 9 am, is safe and secure for kiddies and teens, and is only R 21 per person. Buy tickets at the gate.
The Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens out in Roodepoort are also having a concert. Pack a picnic or eat at The Eagle’s Fare Restaurant, listen to Jannie Moolman with his band and enjoy a hike and look for the Black Eagles so well known in this area. These gardens are magnificent in autumn, the colours sublime. R20 per person and it is an all day event.
If your mom prefers something indoors you might want to think about the theatre. The Victory Theatre in Houghton has a special Mother’s Day Rocky Horror Picture Show. Mothers are free, but make sure you book at 011 – 728 9603. Enjoy a meal before or after the show at the Victory Theatre Restaurant.
Also in Houghton at The Foxwood Theatre is a special viewing of Dinner for One, the story of a ninety year old woman looking for companionship. There are two shows, late morning and mid afternoon, and you can get lunch in the theatre’s gorgeous gardens. Book tickets at 011 – 486 2300.
You could take mom to The Sheds @ 1Fox, inner city. This is a fantastic market, under cover but ‘open,’ with an amazing selection of food, gifts, craft beer, champagne and music. Find a quiet table, enjoy your meal and watch Johannesburg’s hip and trendy wander by. This Sunday there will also be music and surprise gifts for mom.
And then some of our favourite restaurants for Mother’s Day – all close to our Johannesburg Guesthouses – would be The Corner Cafe in Craighall Park, Craft in Parkhurst, or My Bread and Butter in Parkview. Your guesthouse owner will happily help you make reservations, but do it soon. Mother’s Day is a big thing in Jozi!
