Jumpstart your festive season shopping spree

Black Friday is happening this Friday, 23 November, effectively jumpstarting our shopping spree for the coming festive season.

Here are some of our favourite shops, all selling divine goodies with a creative South African flavour.

Joburg branded items from IWASSHOT IN JOBURG at Arts on Main, Maboneng

This ingenious shop has a range of t-shirts, photographs, handbags, purses, notebooks and much more, all with inspiring and relevant Joburg themes. Their products are very hip and trendy, but come with community consciousness. IWASSHOT started as a photographic project, helping to get the homeless off the streets. Check out their online store for original gifts, or visit their pop-up stand in the Rosebank Mall.

IWASSHOT’s cushions are wonderfully vibrant. This Zebra cushion cover is R495.

Jewellery from Kirsten Goss in Birdhaven Shopping Centre, Birdhaven

If you are after jewellery, head to Kirsten Goss in the Birdhaven Shopping Centre. Here you will find handcrafted gold and silver pieces with precious and semi-precious stones. All have exquisite delicate designs.

The handmade Viper necklace comes in various colours.

Books from Love Books in Bamboo Lifestyle Centre, Melville

Owner run, Love Books is small, personal and inviting, with a great selection. One can buy a book and immediately start reading by walking directly into the Service Station Cafe next door for one of their fresh salads and a choice cake with coffee.

The Café de Move-On Blues by Christopher Hope is on Love Books’ highly recommended list. (R290). Stuck in traffic on De Waal drive, Cape Town, Christopher Hope parks his car and walks up to the UCT campus to see what’s causing the trouble. He encounters an angry crowd pulling down the Rhodes statue – the chaotic culmination of the RhodesMustFall movement. What follows is a thoughtful road trip around South Africa’s cities and towns, their statues and memorials.

Music from MrVinyl at 44 Stanley, Braamfontein Werf

Vinyl records are all the rave now. MrVinyl stores are popping up all over Jozi. Our favourite one is located at 44 Stanley, which is a haven for shopaholics. At MrVinyl you will find new and pre-owned records and also some festive gift specials.

This Spin Clean Record Washer MKII Starter Kit is now only R2 090. MrVinyl also delivers straight to your door.

Retro furniture from Re-Trend in Linden

If you do not own a turntable for your vinyl’s, not to worry – you will find one at the eclectic, vintage furniture shop, Re-Trend. Their furniture is gorgeous and one has to jump to buy a piece as they sell as fast as hotcakes! Their slogan: Mid-Century Modern & Retro Living.

This iconic 60s tulip dining room table by Arkana was designed by Maurice Burke and is selling for R5300.
