Conferences and events – make the most of it

Arranging a conference can be stressful.  The work that goes into finding the right venue, sourcing the equipment, figuring out the seating and having a plentiful supply of sandwiches, scones and coffee is huge.  And that is not the half of it, as any conference organiser will tell you.  It’s important to have a room that is quiet, a garden where you can escape to, smaller breakaway rooms and uninterrupted Wi-Fi.

There are excellent conference venues in our Northern Suburbs, close to all our Johannesburg Guest Houses – closest being Green Genes, a personal and creative space in Craighall Park. They have a conference space for 40, and their café in the garden, overlooks a sparkling swimming pool. Also, a Wellness Centre forms part of their service offerings. Five of our excellent guesthouses are closely situated in this trendy suburb: Liz at Lancaster, Ailsa Craig, Rutland House, Amanzi and Craighall Garden.

The Glen Hove is positioned in Melrose Estate, and is perfect for product launches, exhibitions, workshops and corporate functions.  It has a two hundred seater fully equipped auditorium with several well-appointed meeting rooms.  There is ample parking and excellent on site catering.

Nearby is the Killarney Country Club in Houghton. The club is olde-world and charming, and has a range of venues, all with an extensive array of facilities.  The club is as well known for business meetings as it is for party celebrations and weddings, and offers both kosher and halal catering.

Killarney Country Club – their tennis club championships take place from 5 – 13 May 2018.

In Sandton you will find newly renovated HB Connect, previously called Hackle Brooke. This modern establishment offers a 200-seater auditorium, various-sized meeting and conference rooms, private lounges, a restaurant, a café a bar, and of-site catering services.  They cleverly include a complimentary suburban shuttle service.

You may like the idea of ‘working’ in a graceful mansion. The Astrotech Conference Centre is in Parktown, a beautiful and historic part of Johannesburg. The Astrotech is not just about innovative facilities and equipment, but also about elegance, light, and natural beauty.  They have an excellent business center, and offer in-house business training, as well as corporate events and workshops.  It’s one of our favourite places to recommend.

If you don’t mind going a little further afield and want something cutting edge and ‘urban’, then The Forum at Turbine Hall in Newtown (Johannesburg CBD) is interesting. Turbine Hall is a refurbished power station and is an architectural masterpiece with ultra-modern interiors.  It’s a great choice for urban-chic functions.

The Turbine Art Fair happens from 12 to 15 July 2018 – a zesty platform for developing young artists and growing the market for African art.

It’s important to note that there are large hotels in our Rosebank northern suburbs, which all have conference venues.   The Hyatt Regency and The Rosebank (Crowne Plaza) Hotel both have a variety of meeting and function rooms, and the venues are excellent.  We are noticing a trend though  – even when the conference is in a hotel, delegates are often choosing to stay in a more personal and intimate Johannesburg Guest House.

Travellers want charming.  They want one-on-one. They want individual attention and they also want privacy.

So – enjoy your conference.  We are happy to make recommendations for you.

But best of all, book your accommodation with us, and stay in one of our charming guesthouses.
