Last year the Parkview Literary Festival was fabulous and it’s happening all over again in ten days time. Parkwords takes place on Heritage Day, the 24th September, in Parkview Johannesburg, right in the heart of all our Johannesburg Guesthouses.
The first speakers are on at 9.30 am and continue right through into the evening. The literary talks cover a wide range of topics – travel, politics, food, parenting, power (electricity, not Government), women, creative writing and even motorsports. The topics are varied, interesting, informative and also fun! They take place in the various restaurants and cafes – My Bread and Butter, Croft, Stelle and The Perfect Cup.
Some of the speakers include well known South African celebrities / authors Mondli Makhyana, Jenny Crwys-Williams, Dov Fedler, Sarah Emily Duff and top chef Andrea Burgener. You can see the full programme at www.parkview.org.za.
It’s a fantastic way to spend the day. A bit of intellectual stimulation, a lot of sitting in outdoor cafes and drinking coffee or sipping wine, shoppping (Love Books have a special stand) and meeting interesting people.
For parents, there is a full day children’s programme with the theme ‘Celebrating 150 years of Alice in Wonderland.’ There are readings at the library, a teen literature quiz, a cartoon drawing workshop and story-telling throughout the day. There’ll be jumping castles, ice cream and tons of entertainment for the kids.
The event is free although you are invited to bring a book, or three, to donate to the Parkview Library. And in fact kids are also invited to sell their old books and donate 20 % of the profit to the library. There will be three tables set aside for kids to do this. Clever and innovative thinking!
Tyrone Avenue will be closed off for the day so prepare for a fun and wonderful street day. It is advised to walk to and from the event if you’re in the area, or perhaps use Uber so there is no issue with parking.
Go and spend the day. And evening. The Runaway Train will be playing music as the sun goes down.
