Swim, Relax, Have Fun

If you’re in Johannesburg right now, chances are that you are very hot. Our days are sunny and the sun is shining. You need to get some relief from the heat somewhere.

Here are a couple of tips.

Take a dip in the Zoo Lake Public Pool in Parkview. To enter it costs the ridiculous sum of R9 for adults and R6 for children.. The adult pool is 30 metres by 30 metres square and there is also a kiddies pool. You can take a picnic with you and there are always two guards on duty.

This should be a heritage site!

If you’re staying at our Village Green Guest House, which is also in Parkview, you can take a brisk walk to the pool.

The Bougainvillea Suite at Village Green Guest House opens out onto a private herb garden as well as the patio and swimming pool

We also love the swimming pool at the African Pride Melrose Arch Hotel. They have tables and chairs IN the pool and you can enjoy lunch and a cocktail whilst cooling down.

Apparently the gourmet burger at the hotel is a top seller

The more adventurous may decide to drive out to the pristine nature of the Magaliesberg. Within 90 minutes’ drive,  you will have forgotten the trials and tribulations of urban life, and nature will welcome you with her beauty and charm.

This year, we decided to go kloofing (another word is “canyoning”) in the Magalies the day after Christmas.

Kloofing entails walking up the slopes of the Magalies Mountain and then scrambling and abseiling into the pristine gorge below, following the stream all the way down.

Our guide and mentor, Rob Thomas is a member of The School for Mountain Leadership. He has is own Mountain Adventures business – he was fantastic in showing us the ropes, literally and figuratively speaking!

If you are a guest in December at one of our Johannesburg Guesthouses, they will most certainly look after you. Extra ice water in your guest suites. Extra ice in your drinks. Lounge chairs in the shade by the swimming pools. Fans in the bedrooms. And bottled water, in plentiful supply, to take with you on your excursions.
