Mother’s Day in the Parks

This coming weekend it’s going to be all about The Mothers.  Those wonderful women who pack lunch-boxes, nurse scratched knees, lie awake at night waiting for their teens to come home, lovingly feed and walk the dogs, schlep the kids to soccer and ballet, and of course, love and look after the fathers too!

Sunday the 11th of May is Mother’s Day.  It’s a day to give Mom a Hallmark Card, or even a homemade card, make her breakfast in bed, and shower her with chocolates and flowers.  And then spoil her with a wonderful Spa treatment, perhaps a fabulous outdoor lunch, or a family day in the park.

Flowers win any women’s heart.  If you’re staying at a Johannesburg Guest House, you don’t need to sneak into the garden to pick a fragrant, fresh bunch.  Your host will happily give you a pair of scissors and direct you to the roses. If you need a florist, Dunkeld Fruit and Flowers or Tyrone Fruiterers are both in The Parks, close to all our Guest Houses.  Go early, buy fresh, and buy early, you do not want them to run out!

Of course, you can also ask your Guest House owner to prepare a special breakfast in bed for Mom, pop open the champagne, arrange the flowers for you, or book a delicious restaurant on your behalf.

If you really want to  indulge, try Hands on Retreat  in Craighall.  They’re offering a ‘Mom and Daughter 2 hour Spa Escape Package’ at a fabulous price, including neck, shoulder, foot and hand massages, with tea and cake included.  Space is limited, so book now, on 011 – 326 3181.

Our own Clico Boutique Hotel in Rosebank are offering a special three-course meal, with a glass of South African bubbly, at just R 375.00 per person.  Clico offer a luxury fine dining experience, using only seasonal, fresh and organic ingredients, and if you have a meal here, your mom or partner will love you forever. You’ll need to book in advance though, 011 – 252 330.

Belle’s Patisserie in The Blubird Centre (Athol, also close to all the Johannesburg Guest Houses) have special menus for breakfast, high tea or lunch, and they are throwing in a special Mother’s Day gift.  Anything at Belle’s will melt your heart!  Mouth-watering, decadent and bespoke pastries and tarts, using French butter, Belgium chocolate and only the finest ingredients.  You get the picture! Eat here, or buy something in advance, and remember, chocolate or icing make everything better!

If you’re looking for something more family orientated, the 702 Mother’s Day Picnic at The Zoo is a Johannesburg annual institution. I’ve been to this picnic for fifteen years in a row, and I think it’s the best family outing in Johannesburg. Take a blanket, or borrow one if you’re from out of town, and pack a picnic.  This year Freshly Ground are opening the concert, and then you can laze back and listen to the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra, with soloists Tim Moloi and Naz Holland.  Go early to get easy parking, the gates open at 8.30 am and the Zoo is open all day, cost is R 65.00 per adult and R 40.00 for kids.  (Free, three years and below)

It’s Autumn in Johannesburg.  The sky is a warm blue and the red gold colors on the trees are magnificent.  Get outside. Spoil your Mom. Have a magnificent day!

Or – stay indoors! Spoil your wife by booking a romantic evening at one of our Johannesburg Guest Houses.   You won’t be disappointed.
