Any restaurant that offers breakfast 24/7 has my vote. So when I opened the Hodge’s menu and saw ‘Breakfast – Served all Day’ I smiled, ordered eggs benedict and opened my computer.
Donald, one of the owners, came to join me. Donald, his mom Alison and sister Tamsin, opened Hodges in October 2000. It is one of those restaurants in Johannesburg, and there are not many believe me, that have been around forever and are consistent.
Consistently good service, consistently good food and a consistently great atmosphere.
One of the waiters saw me with my computer and immediately came and gave me the wi-fi code. Impressive, because often in Johannesburg you have to wave your arms around, yell and and leap off your chair to get someone’s attention.
Wi-fi is free and the signal is good. The code on the day I went was 1969AbbeyRoad, which made me smile. Donald loves music and had been listening to The Beatles in the morning. The day before though the code was SconesRaspberryJam – inspired by Tamsin’s delicious baking.
Hodges is an unpretentious space, lots of wooden tables with white tablecloths, a little old fashioned but with absolute charm; a really lovely and light space. It is in the Colony Shopping Centre, Craighall Park with an indoor and an outdoor area leading into a gorgeous bookstore, BookDealers. (new and second hand books)
While I was there I bumped into friends of friends. Three women who’ve been lunching at Hodges for the past ten years. They had their 60th and 70th birthday parties there and could not stop raving. They also go every Sunday for the famous Sunday Roasts – chicken, lamb or pork. Their prices are really good, generous portions, and people come time and time again. I understand why.
Hodges occasionally has special functions – book launches and live music. I asked to go on their mailing list and was told – Social Media. And they’re right. All their advertising is via Facebook and Twitter, and given their 3000 followers, they’re doing something right. They recently hosted a really successful Valentines Day dinner, and always have a Christmas in July.
I was impressed that tucked away in a corner was a box to collect clothing for the homeless. They are a socially responsible restaurant and work closely with St. Martins in the Veld, a nearby Church, helping to feed and clothe those in need.
Hodges is open daily, 7 am till about 8.30 pm. And it is really close to many of our Johannesburg Guesthouses. Tell Donald we recommended you come. They’ll look after you well.
Find them on Facebook – Hodges Coffee House.
Follow them on Twitter – @Hodgescoffee
Phone them – 011 880 5010.
Go there – The Colony Shopping Centre, just off Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall.
N.B. Try their scones. They really are the best in Johannesburg. The apple pie isn’t bad either.
