Father’s Day – whatever you do, do it together

We gave you a ton of suggestions for Mother’s Day, so it’s only fair that we tell you what you can do on Father’s Day. Mark your calendar for this Sunday, 17 June.

How about a drive out in the winter sun to Maropeng in the Cradle of Humankind? The Tumulus Restaurant, situated on the third floor of the Maropeng Visitor Centre, offers a delicious three course meal.

You may even decide to stay over at the Maropeng Hotel, which has breathtaking views of the Witwatersberg and Magaliesberg ranges.

Talking about cradles, known as the Cradle of Creativity, the Nirox Sculpture Park is hosting a Roots Music Concert. A collection of South Africa’s finest musicians will perform their musical compositions in this ancient place interpreting indigenous sounds and rhythms through modern allegories. The musical programme will draw on historic African sounds from Marabi (township music), Mbaqanga (traditional Zulu), Umgqashiyo, Isicathamiya or Mbube (Zulu a capella), Sakkie Sakkie (Afrikaner music), Goema (Cape jazz), Kwela (pennywhistle-based street jive), Xhosa Folk and even African meditation.

Bongeziwe Mabandla is one of the artists performing at The Roots Music Concert. The others include Sibusile Xaba, Indlovukazi, Pops Mohamed and The Urban Village.

The Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel is throwing a braai for Dads. Their expert chefs will braai his favourite foods without the usual schlep you have at home. The hotel is even offering some specials on haircuts. That’s to say, if Dad still has hair.

You may decide that Dad deserves a gift for all his hard work on this special day. There are many options for gifting. A new shirt, a winter sweater, a nice beanie  – Cape Union Mart has a great selection, as do Stuttafords.

Of course you could go to the movies for that action movie Dad’s been dying to see, buy beautiful books at Love Books in Melville or eat something extraordinary at The Great Eastern Food Bar, also in Melville.

The Great Eastern Food Bar has introduced the Milk Tart Mochi. Does Dad also love milk tart?

Even if Dad only wants to sit at home and watch sport, you can make sure to spend some quality time with him during the breaks.

Enjoy your family time together this Sunday.
