Quiet avenues lined with deep-rooted Jacaranda and Plane trees lead to a lively hub amidst the ‘parks’. A trendy setting on the corner of 7th and 3rd Avenue is where succulent aromas waft past and tease one’s senses. Celebrated for its steakhouses, Parktown North is one of the oldest suburbs of Johannesburg and certainly tells a story.
A rich history reflected by what was the home of the subordinate residence of the Randlords (the entrepreneurs who controlled the diamond and gold industries of Joburg in the pioneer phase of the 1870s and up to World War I). Evolving from European influence, beautifully renovated colonial homes and well-manicured tranquil parks invites one to the area. And amongst these homes lie two guesthouses for the discerning traveller.
One of these guesthouses is the four-star Leighwood Lodge with its Graeco-Roman feel. The rooms are spacious, elegant and classy with luxurious finishing touches that overlook the landscaped garden. With excellent but non-intrusive service it’s a great escape from the typical stereotyped hotel atmosphere. As one previous guest Tanvi described it, “On the day I was checking in, I remember picturing it as one of those typical bed and breakfasts. But it was nothing close. My first reaction, “Wo!” There couldn’t have been a better surprise when those doors opened. I am a Mauritian, I study in Scotland and I am on a 3 month work experience trip in Johannesburg. As a foreigner from a diverse background, this place definitely made me feel at home.’ Their luxury features including a plasma TV with 18 channels, under-floor heating and heated towel rails which all add to the experience. And not forgetting the business functionality of Wi-Fi, fax, scanning and photocopying facilities which easily keep guests in touch with the outside world.
Another guesthouse situated in this peaceful environment is Acorns on 8th. Offering a comfortable stylish yet non-pretentious cottage and apartment, both with their own private entrance. A past guest Barbara described her stay as just perfect and said, ‘We started our trip to South Africa in Johannesburg and unfortunately we only stayed one night with Pam and Wiggie. We really had a fantastic time! It was the best and most hearty start to our holiday we could have imagined! The apartment is really pretty, well-spaced and at the same time cosy. We really felt at ease.’ The fully equipped kitchenettes coupled by the comfort and privacy of them make Acorns on 8th ideally suited for long term stays for both business guests and those who may be relocating to Johannesburg.
Further along, a crossroad in Parktown North is famous for its award winning steakhouses with street-side tables. A sophisticated liveliness welcomes both residents and visitors both day and night! Top restaurants such as The Local Grill ticks every box and is famous for high quality cuisine cooked to perfection. There are many restaurants and steakhouses all over the city, some are good, some okay. But there are only a few who have earned the outstanding banner, and sitting at the top of that table is the famous Local Grill. Other supreme steakhouses which woo its patrons include Wombles, The Foundry, and Turn & Tender. Wombles, is perfect for a traditional sensation and is a majestic colonial type homestead accompanied by a truly African style cuisine. The wide veranda makes for a serene setting in summer and the walls which are embellished with animal trophies enhance the colonial experience. For festivity, The Foundry will entice with its rustic influence of flavours, eclectic young vibe, and choice of tap-house craft beer (one look at their selection is all it takes to see how much love and dedication has gone into putting together the perfect bar).
Parktown North has earned the title of being a dining and entertainment mecca of Johannesburg, and is in close proximity to retail outlets, art galleries, museums, adventure and wildlife.
