Parktown High School for Girls have become well known for their brilliant Art Pop Up Shops which take place once or twice a year.
Their first event in 2017 is happening on Sunday 02 April and you do not want to miss it. It is a really good opportunity to buy an amazing piece of South African art, a limited edition print, by one of our creative (and famous) South African artists. The works that will be on sale were all made during the 1970s and early 1980s – drawn from one of the most important art clubs South Africa has ever produced, The Graphic Club.
The Graphic Club was started by artist Fred Schimmel in 1970. It was aimed at giving entry-level art collectors a way to own and invest in art, in an accessible way. Members would pay a monthly fee and were entitled to two works of art by any of the artists who also contributed to the club. Prints were embossed with the letters GC (Graphic Club) and were all signed, dated and editioned.
Over 250 of these limited edition art works are going to be on sale, on Sunday 02 April.
You will find pieces by Walter Battiss, Lucky Sibiya, Cecil Skotnes, Judith Mason, Dirk Meerkotter and Fred Schimmel amongst many others. Prices start at R 1500.00 with the most expensive artwork going at R 60000.00. Mostly, they range between R 3000.00 and R 7000.00, making them affordable, great bargains, and valuable too.
And they’re all GC pieces.
The Runaway Train will be playing live music, there will be food trucks and coffee trucks (of course) and supervised activities for kids.
The sale starts at 9 am and goes on until 4 pm. If you’re a serious buyer, get there at 9 am. If you’re going for fun and to browse, get there any time you can. Parktown High School for Girls is close to our Johannesburg Guesthouses and this will be a fab way to spend a couple of hours.
