If you’re in Johannesburg right now chances are you are BOILING. We’re in the midst of a heatwave, there isn’t a cloud in sight and you need to get relief somewhere.
Here are a couple of tips.
Take a dip in the Zoo Lake Swimming Pool. It’s in Parkview, costs the ridiculous sum of R 8.00 to get in and has an adult’s and kiddies pool. You can do lengths, hang out in the shade and take a picnic with you. You only need a towel, swimming costume, sunhat and sunblock and if you’re staying at our Zoo Lake B&B or Roscommon Cottage, you can walk. They’ll even lend you a towel.
While you’re in the area, go lounge under the trees at Moyo Restaurant which is at the Zoo Lake. This is a real tranquil retreat, they have a fab African style menu but also serve iced cocktails and ice-cream for the kids. Go early so you can get one of their cosy couches.
There are tons of restaurants in Parkhurst along the sidewalk but our favorite has to be Espresso. It’s one of the most consistent cafes in the area, and apart from the fact that their menu, service and food are all good, it has those fabulous misting fan vapour things! So you can sit outdoors, sip an iced coffee and have icy cold mist blow over your face!
Go and have a massage or Spa treatment at Hands on Retreat. They’ll cool you down with their gorgeous calming aromatherapy oils, and afterwards you can sit under the giant eucalyptus trees alongside the river. This is a real oasis, in Craighall, a perfect place to escape the heat for a couple of hours.
We also love the swimming pool at the Melrose Arch Hotel. They have tables and chairs IN the pool and you can roll up your jeans and get your feet wet while you enjoy a snack, cocktail and /or full on meal. You do need to book though. Afterwards, enjoy a drink in their bar and library, which is dark and sexy, but also has the best aircon in town!
And of course all of our Johannesburg Guesthouses will look after you! Extra ice water in your guest suites. Extra ice in your drinks. Lounge chairs in the shade by the swimming pools. Fans in the bedrooms. And bottled water, in plentiful supply, to take with you on your excursions.
Stay cool Jozi. It’s steaming out there.
