I thought it would be a nice idea to write about what we think is a perfectly indulgent Johannesburg day. Try this for a birthday or special celebration.
Wake up, stretch, and have someone bring you coffee in bed. Preferably your Johannesburg Guesthouse staff, but your partner would also be okay! Sip, roll over, sleep a little longer, then get slowly out of bed and put on your tackies.
A brisk walk, with or without dogs, either the Delta Park or Emmarentia. Enjoy the gorgeous autumn colours with the sun glinting on the water. Take your camera for pics of the wide open spaces and beautiful trees and flowers in the early morning magic light.
By now you will be ravenous. A quick shower and then head for breakfast at Craft in Parkhurst or The Cnr Café in Craighall. Both are close to all our Johannesburg Guesthouses. Freshly squeezed orange juice, eggs, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, avo, the whole bang shoot. A coffee and then a second one as you sit back and watch Jozi people go about their early business.
It would be mid morning by now. If you’re in Craighall Park, pop in to Toast. It’s become a favorite store of ours, next door to the Cnr Café, with a small but excellent selection of leather goods, scarves, perfumes and shoes. Perfect place to find a gift or just to spoil yourself with something special.
And if you’re in Parkhurst, go and have a look at the gorgeous designer clothing at Egality. We love their dresses, their fabulous high heeled shoes and fantastic selection of Brazilian swimwear. They have a men’s section too.
Then head to Circa Gallery in Rosebank, with the next door Everard Read Gallery. Spend an hour or two wandering around, enjoying the art and sculpture and feeling inspired. The Goodman Gallery and Kim Sacks Gallery are nearby, so you can make it a morning of art.
Time for a nap! Head back to your Johannesburg Guesthouse (or home) and enjoy a siesta, perhaps in the hammock in the garden. Find a sunbeam and don’t feel guilty! Enjoy.
When you’re ready, and you will have booked this in advance, head off to the Spa for your afternoon massage. Hands on Retreat, one of our Guesthouses, offers fantastic packages, and Camelot Spa is nearby too. I recommend the hot stone signature Balinese massage here – you can’t go wrong.
It’s indulgent, it’s delicious, it’s Johannesburg. Try it. You can work on Monday!
